Improve Drainage

One of the most important steps to take when preparing for wet weather gardening is to improve the drainage in your garden. Poor drainage can lead to waterlogged soil, which disrupts PH levels and can cause root rot and other issues. To improve drainage, you can add compost, sand, or other organic matter to your soil. Additionally, you can consider installing drainage pipes or creating raised beds to help water flow away from your plants. Regular maintenance is important for any garden, but it’s especially important during wet weather conditions. Be sure to remove any dead or diseased plants, as they can attract pests and diseases. Additionally, you should remove any fallen leaves or other debris from your garden, as they can block drainage and prevent water from flowing away from your plants.

When landscaping your garden areas, pea gravel is the ideal material to use for coverage because water will drain quickly through it, minimizing pools and puddles. Placing a layer of landscaping fabric under the pea gravel prior to laying it down will prevent weeds from infiltrating.

Choose the Right Plants

Certain plants are better suited for wet weather conditions than others. For example, plants like ferns, hostas, and hydrangeas thrive in wet environments. On the other hand, plants like cacti and succulents are better suited for dry conditions. When choosing plants for your wet weather garden, be sure to do your research and select plants that are well-suited for the conditions in your area. Being that we never really know what variety of weather conditions we’re going to get over the course of the spring and summer, choosing hardy, native plants is generally the safest bet.

Many people are opting for rain gardens on their properties to help divert water away from their foundations and into an area designed specifically to collect runoff. Daylily, Purple Coneflower, and Bee Balm are all popular choices for a Minnesota rain garden because of their water absorption. An added bonus is that they will also attract pollinators!

Protect Your Plants

In wet weather, plants are more susceptible to disease and pests. To protect your plants, consider using organic pesticides and fungicides. Mulch is another great way to protect your plants from wet weather conditions. Mulch helps to retain moisture in the soil, which can be especially important during dry spells. Additionally, mulch can help to regulate soil temperature and prevent erosion.
