How to Freshen Up Your Minneapolis Yard for Springtime

April 28, 2020

The snow is—hopefully—all done for the year and that means it’s time to get your Minneapolis lawn ready for springtime again after a long winter.

There are many things you could do today to get your lawn looking fresh for springtime.  The first step you should take is to remove any debris there may be on your lawn.  If you have pets, this could include picking up after them and for many this means clearing any fallen tree branches, large sticks, pinecones, and any other large debris.  After the large debris is gone, it will be easier for you to identify and clean up the smaller debris, such as smaller sticks, leaves, and dead grasses.

Once the debris has been cleared, you can begin to trim up any trees, bushes, or plants that have been worn down from the winter.  You will want to make sure that you don’t remove any healthy branches as that could cause problems for the health of the plants; you only want to remove dead or damaged branches.

If after the long winter your mulch is starting to seem a bit stale, you can remove and replace it before you do any new planting for the year.  Once you have added your new plants, you can add new mulch on top of it.  This will help to freshen up the overall look of your landscape.  There’s plenty of different options for mulch so make sure you pick what works best for you.

Now, time to take care of the lawn.  If you see any thin or rough spots, you can overseed in those areas.  The first time you mow, you will want it to only be a trim and you will want to wait until the grass is at least 4 or 5 inches to resume your regular mowing habits.  Making sure to not over-cut the lawn the first time is crucial because it helps protect your grass against damage and will help it withstand longer periods of dry, warm weather.

Next, the fun part.  It’s time to bring out all the patio furniture out of storage.  This is when it really starts to feel like spring.  Once the furniture is out, you can also bring out any lawn/garden decor you may have.  You’ll want to make sure that all the furniture and decor is cleaned and ready to go.

After you have done all these quick and easy steps, you are ready to sit back and enjoy your beautiful spring-ready yard!
