How to Keep Insects out of Your Lawn

It’s that time of year again where pesky mosquitoes put a damper on our backyard BBQs and sneaky little beetles and earwigs take up residence in our gardens. But there’s a balance between eliminating the hungry bugs while protecting our pollinators, pets, and kiddos and we’re here to help!

Maintaining your trees and shrubs with regular trimmings is a good first step because direct sunlight can be lethal for many types of bugs. Regular watering and mowing will also help to keep insect populations down and will make your backyard parties much more enjoyable! Be sure to dispose of any lawn clippings and fallen branches, which will help to ensure none of the pests are drawn to the debris. Standing water is a mosquito’s best friend, so being diligent about taking seat cushions and other absorbent items inside will help to minimize their presence.

There’s been a lot of debate around the use of insecticides, but luckily there are plenty of options which are gentle on the environment yet tough on pests. If you’re into DIY techniques, here’s an article on several Natural and Homemade Insecticides you can try your hand at.

Here in MN we try to get as much use out of our backyard spaces as we can. Keeping these areas bug-free makes for a more pleasurable outdoor experience and helps us create positive memories with friends and family in the places we love.
